Corrosion Test Case: Salt-Spray Validation for Outdoor Lighting Housings

The salt-spray test chamber is used to evaluate how aluminum die-cast lighting housings and their surface treatments perform in corrosive environments. A controlled saline mist accelerates exposure conditions associated with coastal air, high humidity and industrial pollution, allowing the quality team to assess protective performance before products enter mass production.

Salt-spray corrosion testing of coated aluminum lighting housings

In a typical validation case, powder-coated, anodized or otherwise treated housings are cleaned, labeled and positioned in the chamber together with representative test coupons. After the specified exposure cycle, inspectors examine flat surfaces, edges, fastener areas and prepared scribe lines for corrosion, blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of adhesion. The findings are recorded and compared across coating systems or process conditions.

Key Evaluation Points

  • Coating integrity after controlled saline exposure
  • Corrosion behavior at edges, scratches and fastener areas
  • Blistering, peeling, discoloration and adhesion changes
  • Comparison of pretreatment and finishing systems
  • Suitability for coastal and high-humidity applications

Salt-spray validation provides practical evidence for selecting and improving pretreatment, coating and sealing processes. By identifying weak points before release, it helps strengthen long-term corrosion resistance and supports more reliable outdoor lighting products in demanding environments.
